What Exclusive Rights Are Granted By A Copyright?
Copyright grants the owner an exclusive right to:

  • Reproduce the work in copies or sound recordings.
  • Make derivative works based upon the original.
  • Distribute copies or sound recordings of the original to the public by sales, rentals, leasing, lending or licensing.
  • Perform the original publicly; and that would include the use of digital audio.
  • Display the original publicly.

When Is My Work Protected?
Once you fix it a tangible form that is perceptible either directly or via a machine or device.

Do I Have To Register To Be Protected?
No.  Copyright exists once the work is created and fixed.  However, you will have to register if you wish to sue for infringement of a U.S. work.

Why Register If Copyright Protection Is Automatic?
Registration provides a public record for which a certificate of registration is issued. Registered works may be eligible for statutory damages and attorney's fees if you successfully sue an infringer, and if you register within five years of publication, registration is on its face evidence presentable in a court of law.

How Long Does Copyright Last?
Generally, life of the author plus seventy years.
